Do you know what can make a photographer really nervous? Being a gift to someone else! I don’t know what it is, but knowing that your photography is going to be someone’s heartfelt gift somehow makes you feel like there is 100 million times more pressure to do an amazing job! And that’s exactly where I found myself with this wedding.
Hannah and my sister Maggie were roommates, and so when Hannah got engaged, Maggie graciously suggested she pay for me to be their photographer. I was so excited when they agreed and let me be a part of their beautiful day!
Hannah and Sanghyeon met while doing classwork together in Soul, South Korea. I learned from Sanghyeon that he and Hannah would just happen to catch up with one other here and there, and during one of these catching up sessions, Sanghyeon started to view Hannah as more than just a friend. OR as the Korean dramas that I love so much would say, he started to view her as a women, which in my humble opinion sounds every so much more romantic.
ANYWHO…The two started dating. But with Hannah often in the US or China, most of their relationship was long distance. They became pros at video chats, and still found the time for one another despite the distance, and now here they are! Finally able to be together for longer than a few weeks, finally able to call one other husband and wife, finally able to start their life together forever.
Their Friday wedding day was beautiful and full of so many sweet moments. I got to start the day with Sanghyeon and Hannah for their first look which took place at Warner Park Community Recreation Center and the surrounding grounds.
Their ceremony took place at High Point Church, in Madison, and Hannah and Sanghyeon were also able to incorporate some Korean traditions into their ceremony via a foot washing ceremony, and by bowing to their parents after the ceremony. It was also amazing to see Sanghyeon’s beautiful mother dressed up in a traditional Korean dress for the ceremony.
After the ceremony they headed back to Warner Park for their reception which took place in a beautiful light filled hall! Floor to ceiling windows should be a thing at every venue!
I was able to sneak them out for a few more golden hour portraits (always a favorite time of mine!), and then got to snap a few more pictures before the evening crept in and I had to rush off for another wedding which was to take place the next day.
All in all, it was one of my favorite weddings I’ve ever had the honor to photograph. Not only because watching Hannah and Sanghyeon was like watching a real life kdrama…but also because their relationship, grounded on Jesus Christ, grew and thrived into such a precious love for one another. Despite the distance, despite only getting to see each other a few weeks here and there, they now are husband and wife.
And now they can continue to grow together.
